Ripun Bora
INC | Barchalla | ਉਡੀਕ
Senior Congress leader and former Rajya Sabha MP Ripun Bora is contesting from the Barchalla Assembly constituency in the 2026 Assam elections.
Bora has previously represented the Gohpur constituency twice, winning in 2001 and 2006, and also served as a cabinet minister in the Tarun Gogoi government. He later went on to become the president of the Assam Pradesh Congress Committee, and subsequently a member of the Rajya Sabha.
His political journey has seen a brief detour in recent years. Bora quit the Congress in April 2022 and joined the Trinamool Congress, where he was appointed the party’s Assam unit chief. However, he resigned from the TMC in September 2024, stating that people in Assam viewed it as a “regional party” of West Bengal and were not willing to accept it as their own. Within days of his exit, he returned to the Congress fold.
Now contesting from Barchalla, Bora’s candidature reflects the Congress’s attempt to leverage experienced leadership alongside its organisational reset in the state, as it seeks to regain lost ground against the BJP.
Candidate Info: Ripun Bora is the Indian National Congress (INC) candidate contesting from Barchalla (General) Assembly constituency for the 2026 Assam Assembly elections. This male candidate is 70 years of age, according to the election affidavit submitted to the Election Commission of India.
