This constituency covers an approximate area of 746.3 square kilometers and the geographic coordinates of Sabalagadh is: 24°25'42.2"N 87°41'03.5"E.

A total of three Assembly constituencies in the state of Jharkhand share borders with Maheshpur constituency, which are: Pakur, Littipara, Shikaripara. This constituency shares an inter-state border with Birbhum district of West Bengal.

In the 2019 Jharkhand Assembly elections, Stephen Marandi of JMM won in this constituency beating Mistry Soren of BJP by a margin of 34,106 votes which was 20.62% of the total votes cast. In 2014, Stephen Marandi of JMM was the winner in this seat beating Devidhan Tudu of BJP by a margin of 6,156 votes which was 3.83% of the total votes polled in the constituency. In the 2009 Assembly elections, Mistri Soren of JVM won this seat defeating Devidhan Tudu of BJP by a margin of 21,974 votes which was 19.36% of the total votes polled for the seat.
